Abstract. Edge detection is a very important stage in the processing of image information [Marr--Hildreth (1980)]. When the edge detection is performed on range images it provides much more information than the edge detection based only on intensity images because range images have explicit 3-D information. In this paper, we present a study of how to detect step and roof edges on range images, that, when combined, can be used, for example, to give an aproximate number of image´s regions. We also deve morfology based algorithm to perform thinning operation on the detected edges.
